There was a new study conducted by the University of California, San Diego, which has discovered that the culprit behind why eating red meat leads to higher instances of cancer – and it all actually has to do with sugar.
When it comes to eating red meat, humans are actually the only animals who have a higher risk of cancer, as some other carnivores eat red meat naturally with no ill side effects. The study which was actually published on December 29th in the “Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,” has discovered that one unique sugar with the name Neu5Gc, has been found in most mammals, but not in humans, and it triggers an immune response that in turn causes inflammation.
The leader of the study Ajit Varki explained the effect that this sugar had in mice:
“Until now, all of our evidence linking Neu5Gc to cancer was circumstantial or indirectly predicted from somewhat artificial experimental setups … This is the first time we have directly shown that mimicking the exact situation in humans – feeding non-human Neu5Gc and inducing anti-Neu5Gc antibodies -increases spontaneous cancers in mice.”
The particular sugar can actually be found in red meats (using the nutritional definition of red meat, which includes pork and other livestock), cow’s milk and certain cheeses. Unluckily for us humans, our bodies do not have the ability to produce this sugar naturally, so when it is absorbed in our tissues, it is seen as some foreign invader. Then, this leads to the activation of our immunities.
The result from this is inflammation. And, while inflammation is actually not a great thing, in and of itself, it gets worse. If our immunity is subject to this type of sugar frequently, the result from that will be chronic inflammation. Then, this inflammation can actually lead to cancer. Those people that consume red meat on regular basis will definitely suffer a stronger reaction than those who ingest red meat on an occasional basis.
Some other animals, strictly carnivores that can make the Neu5GC sugar can eat red meats. Humans, which are not being strict carnivores, cannot. Therefore, it seems clear that humans must avoid red meat consumption or they will face inflammation and possible cancer. At the minimum, reducing the consumption of red meat will boost your health.
If for some reason you think that eating red meat every day is not a bad thing, well now, you have the proof. Sorry, meat eaters, humans just are not built to be true carnivores.
